Teachers Tackle Issue of Homelessness with StudentsTeachers in Edinburgh are being encouraged to cover the issue of homelessness with their pupils as part of the curriculum.

Housing charity Shelter Scotland have developed a classroom plan for students between the ages of seven and 14. This has been tested and has proved extremely successful.

Graeme Brown, the charity's Director, told the Edinburgh Evening News: "Bad housing and homelessness can have a devastating effect. The classroom kit is a fantastic way to educate children about bad housing and encourage them to get involved."

The lesson plans can be downloaded from the Shelter Scotland website and encourage youngsters to engage with the subject of homelessness even by themselves.

In other Scottish education news, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Michael Russell MSP hosted the country's first Engage for Education event earlier this month, giving teachers and parents the opportunity to voice their opinions on the new Curriculum for Excellence.
